What to Wear in Darjeeling

Darjeeling is cool all year and cold at dawn, which is when most sightseeing starts. Pack layers you can peel off by midday, and shoes that grip wet stone stairs.

Dress for four in the morning

The Tiger Hill sunrise sets the dress code for the whole trip. You stand on an exposed hilltop at about 2,500 metres for an hour or more before the sun comes up. In winter it can be close to freezing there, and even in April it is cold. Wear a thermal layer, a fleece or thick jumper, a windproof jacket, a woolly hat and gloves. By ten you will be down in town and taking half of it off, so carry a small bag.

Season by season

  • October to February – cold mornings and nights, bright days. Pack a proper down or padded jacket for December and January.
  • March to May – mild days, cool evenings. A light jacket and a jumper are usually enough, plus a warm layer for dawn trips.
  • June to September – rain almost every day and thick mist. Bring a rain jacket or a good umbrella, quick-dry clothes and shoes that can get wet. Denim takes days to dry.

Shoes

The town is steep. Lanes are often cobbled or stepped and turn slippery in mist, which can roll in at any time of year. Wear walking shoes or ankle boots with a grippy sole. Leave heels and smooth-soled sandals at home.

Local dress

Many Gorkha families wear the daura-suruwal for men and the gunyu-cholo for women at weddings and festivals such as Dashain, with a Dhaka-cloth topi for men. Tibetan and Bhutia women wear the wrap-around bakhu (chuba), sometimes with a striped apron. Tailors and stalls around Chowrasta sell both, and a Dhaka topi or a Tibetan-style jacket makes a good keepsake. See the Tiger Hill page for what to wear there.

At monasteries

Monasteries and the Mahakal shrine ask for quiet and modest dress. Take shoes off at the door, remove hats inside prayer halls, and keep shoulders covered.

Questions

Darjeeling — FAQ

Does it snow in Darjeeling?

Snow in town is rare and does not fall every winter. Light snow is more likely on higher ground such as Tiger Hill and Sandakphu in January or February, so don't plan a trip around it.

Can I buy warm clothes in Darjeeling if I forget them?

Yes. The stalls around Chowrasta, the Mall and the Tibetan market sell jackets, shawls, hats and gloves, and hand-knitted woollens are easy to find in winter.

Do I need rain gear outside the monsoon?

Carry a light rain jacket in spring and autumn too. Mist and short showers can arrive in any month, and the dampness makes the cold feel sharper.
