Pack: a compact umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October to March: the easy visit
Cool, dry weather makes queuing and climbing comfortable. December and January mornings are cold, and early darshan queues can be chilly, so bring a shawl. Crowds are steady but manageable on weekdays. Mondays, which are sacred to Shiva, are busier all year. This is the best season for Trikut and Tapovan, when the hills are pleasant to walk.
Shravan (July–August): the pilgrimage
The Shravani Mela runs through the Hindu month of Shravan, usually from July into August. Kanwariyas carry Ganga water about 105 km on foot from Sultanganj to offer at the temple. Several million come over the month, with the heaviest days on Mondays. Queues stretch for kilometres, roads close to vehicles, lodges fill and prices rise.
If you come as a pilgrim, book early and plan for long waits in heat and rain. If you come as an observer, stay a night or two, watch the procession and choose a weekday. If you only want an easy darshan, avoid this month.
Mahashivratri (February–March)
The town's second great festival. A Shiv Barat — Shiva's wedding procession — winds through the streets with floats and music, and the temple is crowded all night.
April to June
Hot, often very hot by midday, and the quietest season. Darshan is quicker, but plan any outdoor visits for early morning and evening.
July to September, outside Shravan
The monsoon brings humidity and rain. After Shravan ends, crowds ease again, though pilgrims continue to arrive in smaller numbers through the following month.
Our pick
November to February for an unhurried visit. For the spectacle, a weekday in Shravan, booked well ahead. See events and festivals for dates and details.
