Best time to visit Guwahati

Guwahati is never really dry. The question is how humid and how wet, and October to April is when both are at their lowest.

October to November: the best balance

The rain eases through October, the air clears and the river is still full and wide. Durga Puja usually falls in this window, and pandals light up the city. Days are warm and slightly sticky early in the month, and pleasant by November. This is the best time for sunset cruises and clear photos from the hilltop temples.

December to February: cool and busy

The most comfortable weather of the year, with mild days and cool evenings. Early mornings can be foggy over the Brahmaputra, which sometimes delays ferries and flights. Mid-January brings Magh Bihu, with bonfires, feasts and fresh pitha. This is also peak season for trips on to Kaziranga, so hotels on the tourist route fill up.

March to April: warming up

Temperatures climb and the haze returns, but the city is lively. Rongali Bihu, the Assamese new year, lands in mid-April with dancing, music and a week of holidays. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms start around April and can arrive suddenly in the afternoon.

May to September: hot, humid and wet

This is the hard season. Heavy rain from late May onwards brings waterlogging in low-lying streets and landslides on some hill roads. The air is sticky even when it is not raining. Kaziranga closes for the monsoon, so there is less reason to pass through. Kamakhya's Ambubachi Mela in late June draws huge crowds while the temple itself is closed for three days.

Our short answer

Come between late October and early April. Avoid late June unless you are coming for Ambubachi. If you can only travel in the monsoon, plan indoor mornings at the Assam State Museum, keep river trips flexible, and carry good rain gear.

Questions

Guwahati — FAQ

Is Guwahati humid in winter too?

Less so. December to February is the driest and most comfortable stretch, though mornings by the river can still feel damp and foggy. October and March are noticeably stickier.

Can I visit Guwahati in the monsoon?

Yes, but plan around the rain. City sights stay open, but streets can flood after heavy showers, ferries may pause when the river is high, and onward trips to Kaziranga are off because the park is closed.

When is the Brahmaputra at its most photogenic?

October and November, when the river is still wide after the monsoon and the air has cleared. In winter the water drops and sandbanks appear, which gives a different, quieter picture.
