Local tips

Join the general queue before the gates open if you want to finish before the midday pause.

Book the temple's faster-darshan arrangement on the temple's official website rather than through third parties at the gate.

Leave your shoes at one of the stalls on the approach and note its name, as many look alike.

Carry a small bag for your phone, because it must stay switched off and hidden in the queue.

Expect to see goats being led to sacrifice, and stay in the main courtyard if that will upset you.

Take a cab to the top rather than walking the old stone path in the heat or rain.

Walk up to the Bhuvaneshwari temple afterwards for the best view from Nilachal Hill.

Why Kamakhya matters

Kamakhya is one of the oldest and most revered Shakti Peethas, the shrines linked to the body of the goddess Sati. It is also a centre of tantric worship. The sanctum has no idol. Instead, a stone cleft kept wet by a natural spring is worshipped as the goddess, down a flight of steps in a dim, crowded chamber. The main temple dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, rebuilt under the Koch and Ahom kings, and its beehive-shaped spire is one of the best-known shapes in Assam.

The queues

There are two ways in. The general queue is free and can take anything from an hour to most of the day. A paid for on the temple's faster-darshan arrangement moves much faster and can be booked on the temple's official website. On festival days the temple's faster-darshan arrangement is often suspended and everyone joins the same line. Darshan usually pauses around midday while the goddess is offered her meal, so plan to be in the queue early in the morning.

Ambubachi Mela

For three days in late June the temple shuts completely while the goddess is believed to menstruate. In 2026 it closed on the night of 22 June and reopened on 26 June. Huge numbers of pilgrims gather on the hill and the reopening queue is extreme. Check the dates before you plan a visit around June.

What to expect

This is a working shrine, not a monument. Goats are sacrificed most days in a separate area. Stalls sell red cloth, flowers and sweets for offerings. Shoes are left at stalls on the approach road, and you walk barefoot from there. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temples on the hill.

The rest of Nilachal Hill

Several smaller temples to the Mahavidyas surround the main complex. Walk up to the Bhuvaneshwari temple at the top of the hill for a wide view over the Brahmaputra and the city.
