About Jai Vilas Palace
Jai Vilas Palace was built in 1874 for Maharaja Jayajirao Scindia and designed by Sir Michael Filose in a European style, with Tuscan, Italian Doric and Corinthian columns on its three floors. Part of the palace is still a home of the Scindia family, and much of the rest has been the Jiwajirao Scindia Museum since 1964.
The highlight is the richly gilded Durbar Hall and its two giant chandeliers, each said to weigh about 3.5 tonnes and among the largest in the world. The story goes that elephants were walked across the roof to test its strength before the chandeliers were hung. Look out, too, for the dining room, where a silver model train once carried drinks and cigars around the table, and for the galleries of portraits, swords, silverware and royal belongings.
