About the Tomb of Tansen

Tansen, one of the 'nine jewels' of Emperor Akbar's court and one of the most celebrated musicians in Indian history, is buried in the Hazira area of old Gwalior, in the garden of his Sufi teacher Muhammad Ghaus. The large domed tomb of Muhammad Ghaus, built in the early Mughal style after 1563, dominates the site with its carved stone screens, while Tansen's own tomb beside it is smaller and simpler.

People still come here to pay their respects, and a tamarind tree beside the tomb is said to sweeten the voice of anyone who chews its leaves. Every December the garden hosts the Tansen Samaroh, one of India's oldest classical music festivals, which began in 1924 and held its 100th edition in 2024.
