About the Halebidu Museum
The Archaeological Museum at Halebidu is run by the Archaeological Survey of India and sits on the same grounds as the Hoysaleswara Temple. Set up in the 1970s, it holds sculptures, hero stones and inscriptions found in and around Halebidu, the old Hoysala capital of Dwarasamudra.
Part of the collection is in a small indoor gallery, and much more is laid out on the lawns outside, with rows of carved gods, animals and temple fragments. Visiting after the main temple helps you understand the carvings you have just seen, and seeing the figures up close shows how fine Hoysala stonework was.
