About the Hoysaleswara Temple
The Hoysaleswara Temple is the largest monument in Halebidu and one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. Building began around 1121 CE under King Vishnuvardhana, on the banks of a large man-made lake in the Hoysala capital of Dwarasamudra. The temple has two Shiva shrines side by side, Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara, and both stand on a raised, star-shaped platform. In 2023 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas".
The outer walls are the reason to come. They are carved in continuous bands of elephants, lions, horsemen and scrolls, with larger panels above showing gods, dancers and stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. The city fell in the early 14th century and some carvings were damaged, but most of the stonework survives. A large Nandi faces each shrine, and the ASI museum is on the same grounds.
