What to Pack for Hampi Trip
A ready-to-tick checklist for Hampi — the essentials, what to wear in each season, plus a style and a health kit. Pair it with the best time to visit and the safety guide.
By Touristoo · Updated
Hampi asks for loose and light rather than little. Covered arms and legs in light cotton are cooler in real sun than shorts, and they solve the temple dress code at the same time.
What Hampi specifically adds to the general list below: shoes come off constantly at the temples, so slip-ons and a pair of socks save more time and discomfort than they sound like they would and the forts and monuments mean long stretches on uneven stone in open sun — proper shoes and a hat matter more than a nice outfit.
The lists below change by season because the answer genuinely does — winter is the comfortable window here, and packing for it looks little like packing for the opposite end of the year.
What to pack for Hampi
What to pack for Hampi comes down to three questions - which season, how much walking, and what kind of ground - and each has a short answer.
The calendar first: October to February is the recommended window, and packing for those months is the assumption throughout this guide.

🌦️ Start with the season
In the plains the pleasant months bring warm days, cool-ish mornings and cool evenings - exactly the spread that layers handle best: breathable daywear plus one jacket or shawl.
Outside the pleasant window, the plains are hot first and wet later - loose light clothing, extra sun protection, and in the rains the same packable shell as anywhere.
👕 Clothing that earns its place
Pack the modest set: loose, light clothing that covers shoulders and knees. It is the single choice that keeps every temple, market and home visit effortless.
A scarf or shawl is the most useful single item in an Indian bag - sun cover, temple cover-up, shoulder wrap for cool evenings and AC transport, all in one fold.
Shoes you can slip off quickly matter more than any other footwear decision - footwear comes off at places of worship, and laces get old on the tenth temple of the day.
Add for the plains: comfortable walking shoes for long flat distances, and a cap or hat that survives being stuffed in a day pack.
🎒 The day pack
What leaves the hotel every morning: water, sun protection, a charged power bank, and offline maps sorted the night before.
The India additions: a small pack of tissues and hand sanitiser, any medicines you rely on with their labels, and a photocopy or phone photo of your passport kept separately from the document itself.
Drink sealed bottled or filtered water only, and let ice in established places make its own decisions; the adjustment is small and the trip is smoother for it.
📄 Documents and money
The document set: passport, a spare copy kept apart from it, insurance reachable offline, and every booking saved to the phone before departure day.
The currency is INR; cards cover most city spending, with cash for the small and the informal
- and in India, favour small denominations: they smooth fares, tips and small purchases in a way large notes never do.
🧴 The small extras
For the flats: real sun headwear, a scarf for dusty stretches, and rehydration salts in the heat - the quiet essentials of plains travel.
🧺 Pack for a week, not a month
Laundry is easy and inexpensive in most of the world - pack half of what you planned and let the local laundry do the rest; the bag stays light and the choices stay simple.
In India specifically, hotel and press laundry is fast and excellent value - a wardrobe of five or six changes refreshes itself overnight.
