Local tips
Arrive when the gates open to beat the tour groups and the heat.
Walk up the ramp to Suraj Pol or take a jeep; you do not need an elephant ride to reach the top.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the ramps and courtyards are steep and uneven.
Photograph the fort and its reflection from the far side of Maota Lake before you go in.
Ask for the composite ticket if you plan to visit Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Nahargarh too.
Hire a licensed guide at the official counter rather than someone who approaches you.
Carry water and a hat, as the courtyards have little shade.
About Amber Fort
Amber Fort (also spelt Amer) stands on a hillside about 11 km north of Jaipur, above Maota Lake. Raja Man Singh I began it in the late 16th century, and it was the seat of the Kachhwaha rulers until they moved to Jaipur in 1727. It is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From outside, the fort is a long run of golden sandstone walls. Inside, you walk through a series of courtyards: the Diwan-i-Aam hall of public audience, the painted Ganesh Pol gateway and the Sheesh Mahal, whose walls and ceiling are covered in small mirrors. Jaigarh Fort sits on the ridge above, and the old town of Amer lies at the foot of the hill.
