What Jodhpur costs
Jodhpur's cost structure is unusual: one ticket dominates everything. Mehrangarh is the best-presented fort in India and its foreign entry is the highest of any Rajasthan monument most visitors will pay — but almost everything else in the city is free or nearly so.
🏰 Mehrangarh Fort
- 2026 entry: ₹200 Indian / ₹800 foreign, and the ticket already includes the museum and the palace apartments — there is no separate museum charge. Older listings show ₹100/₹600 and ₹250/₹600–700; the current published figures are ₹200 and ₹800.
- Audio guide — about ₹180, or roughly ₹120 at concession rates, for both Indian and foreign visitors. Take it. Mehrangarh's museum is dense and the audio guide is the difference between looking at palanquins and understanding them.
- Lift to the upper levels — about ₹50 one way
- Guided tour — ₹300–600 depending on group size
- Camera fees have historically been charged separately (about ₹100 still, ₹200 video); confirm at the counter, as this is often now included.
- Students, seniors and paramilitary personnel — about ₹50, with valid ID
- Children under 5 — free
- Hours 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Allow 2–3 hours.
- Entry is free on 12 May, Jodhpur Foundation Day.
- Tickets at the counter or online in advance from the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, which is worth doing at weekends and holidays.
There are places to eat inside — Chokelao Mahal, Cafe Mehran, Palki Cafe and Vaara Cafe — and the fort's own museum shop sells jewellery, textiles and perfumes at fixed prices.
🎟️ Everything else
- Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell — free, and the best free sight in the city. A restored eighteenth-century baori with cafes around it.
- The Blue City lanes (Brahmpuri, Navchokiya) — free
- Sardar Market and the Clock Tower — free to walk, and the shopping is cheap
- Jaswant Thada — the white marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, a small entry fee, and quietly one of the most beautiful buildings in Rajasthan
- Umaid Bhawan Palace museum — ₹30 Indian / ₹100 foreign. The palace is mostly a working Taj hotel and a private royal home; only a small museum section is open. Worth an hour, not more.
- Mandore Gardens — small fee, and free before a certain hour on some days
- Clock Tower rooftop sunset — the cafes around Toorji ka Jhalra charge only what you order
- Mehrangarh night tour — a separate ticket, worth it if you have a second evening
A full day of Jodhpur — Mehrangarh with the audio guide and lift, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan, the stepwell and the Blue City — costs about ₹500 for an Indian visitor and ₹1,200 for a foreign one.
🛏️ Where you sleep
- Hostel dorm, old city — ₹400–800
- Guesthouse with a fort view — ₹800–2,500. This is the Jodhpur buy. Rooftops in Brahmpuri look straight up at Mehrangarh lit at night, for less than a Delhi business hotel.
- Haveli hotel — ₹3,000–8,000
- Umaid Bhawan Palace itself, a Taj hotel — ₹35,000–1,00,000+. One of the largest private residences in the world and the most expensive bed in Rajasthan.
- Raas, Ajit Bhawan, Ratanada Polo Suites — ₹12,000–30,000
October to March is peak, 10–25°C, and the fort-view rooms book out. April to June is brutally hot and 40–50% cheaper. Monsoon is July to September.
🍛 Food
Jodhpur has the best street-food walk in Rajasthan, and it is concentrated around the Clock Tower:
- Makhaniya lassi — ₹40–100. Thick, saffron-flavoured, topped with cream and dry fruit, served in a clay cup. The signature drink and the reason to stand at a stall.
- Mawa kachori — ₹40–80. A fried pastry stuffed with sweetened khoya, unlike the savoury kachori everywhere else in India. Jodhpur invented it.
- Mirchi vada — ₹30–60. A whole green chilli in gram batter, deep fried. Famous and genuinely hot.
- Gatte ki sabzi — ₹120–250. Gram-flour dumplings in yoghurt gravy, the Rajasthani staple.
- Pyaaz kachori — ₹30–70, the large onion-filled version
- Ker sangri — ₹150–300. Desert berry and bean, the dish that tastes of the Thar.
- Laal maas — ₹300–500
- Rajasthani thali — ₹200–450
- Makhaniya and hot jalebi at 6:00 AM — the local breakfast
A grazing afternoon around the Clock Tower costs ₹200–500 a person and is one of the great cheap food experiences in India. Ease into it — the fried specialities are rich and heavy, and overdoing them on the first afternoon is a common mistake. Drink bottled or filtered water alongside.
🚕 Transport
- Auto-rickshaw — ₹50–200 in-city, ₹100–250 to the fort
- Cycle rickshaw in the market area — ₹30–80
- Uber/Ola — ₹80–300
- Full-day car with driver — ₹1,500–2,500
- Bishnoi village safari — ₹1,500–3,000 for a half-day jeep
- Jaisalmer by shared taxi or bus — ₹400–1,200
🛍️ Shopping
Sardar Market for textiles, mojari, silver, spices and the famous Jodhpur bandhani (tie-dye). Mochiwada for jutti. Jodhpur's specialities are bandhani and leheriya textiles, Mathaniya red chillies, antique furniture from the surrounding villages, and the jodhpurs — the riding breeches that took their name from this city and are still tailored here. Bargain 20–40%.
💰 Three daily budgets
Shoestring — ₹1,200–2,200. Old-city guesthouse ₹600–1,200, Mehrangarh ₹200, street food grazing ₹200–400, autos ₹150–250, the free stepwell and Blue City.
Mid-range — ₹4,500–8,000. Fort-view haveli room ₹2,500–4,500 between two, Mehrangarh with audio guide and lift ₹1,000–1,200 for two, Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan ₹150–250, a car for the day ₹1,500–2,500, restaurant dinner ₹600–1,200.
Comfort — ₹25,000+. Umaid Bhawan Palace or Raas, a private car and guide, a Bishnoi safari, fine dining.
💳 Money
UPI is universal including at the Clock Tower stalls. Foreign cards work in hotels and the fort ticket office but not in Sardar Market. ATMs are around the Clock Tower and on Station Road.
Carry ₹1,500–2,000 in small notes for the street-food walk, autos, and the lift and shoe deposits at monuments.
Jodhpur is cheaper than Jaipur and much cheaper than Udaipur for the same standard of room and food, because it has fewer foreign visitors. That is the reason to stay an extra night.
For getting between all of these, see the Jodhpur transport guide.
Next on the circuit: Jaisalmer.
