Best time to visit Kalimpong

Kalimpong is open all year, but the view is not. The snow peaks show best after the monsoon clears, and the rains from June to September can cut the roads for days.

Recommended

Oct – Mar

Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.

☀️ Summer

Recommended

October to December

This is the clearest time of year. The rain has washed the haze out of the air, mornings are crisp and Kanchenjunga shows from Deolo Hill on most days. Dashain and Tihar fall in these months, so hotels fill up around the holidays. Evenings turn cold by December.

January and February

Winter is cold, damp and often foggy, with quiet streets and low hotel rates. Snow is rare in town. Clear days still bring good views, but fog can sit on the ridge for whole mornings. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, usually falls in February or March.

March to May

Spring is the flower season. The nurseries are at their best, days are mild and it is a pleasant time to walk. Haze and dust from the plains build up through April and May, and the peaks often hide by late morning. This is also when families from the plains arrive for the summer holidays.

June to September

The monsoon is heavy here. Mist and rain close in most days, and landslides on NH10 along the Teesta can stop traffic for hours or days. In recent years the highway has been shut for up to a week at a time. River rafting stops for the season. Travel only if your dates are flexible, and check the road the evening before.

How to choose

Come in October or November for views, in March or April for flowers, and in winter for quiet. Avoid the peak of the monsoon if you have a flight to catch. See events and festivals for dates that affect crowds.

October to December, early in the morning. Spring mornings can be clear too, but haze usually builds by late morning from April.

Rarely. The town is at about 1,250 metres and winters are cold and foggy rather than snowy. For snow, you need to go much higher in Sikkim.
