Best time to visit Kargil
Kargil's season is set by snow on the passes, not by rain. June to September is when every road is open, from Zoji La to Pensi La.
❄️ Winter
Oct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.
Shines now: Suru Valley
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Suru Valley
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
RecommendedJul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →June to September: the main season
This is when the town, the Suru Valley and the road to Zanskar are all open. Days are warm in the sun and nights are cool. The lower Suru Valley is green from late June, with barley fields and poplars below the snow of Nun and Kun. Fresh apricots usually arrive around July and August. September brings clear skies, cooler nights and the first yellow in the poplars.
The monsoon barely reaches here
Kargil lies in the rain shadow of the Great Himalaya. The Indian monsoon, which soaks Kashmir and the plains in July and August, brings little rain here. Most of the year's moisture falls as snow between December and May. Summer storms can still cause landslides or block the highway for a day, so leave slack in your plan.
May and October: shoulder months
In May, the valley is still brown and snow lingers on the higher ground. Pensi La, on the road to Zanskar, usually opens from late May or June. In October, nights turn freezing, tourist camps begin to close, and Pensi La usually shuts later in the month.
November to April: winter
Winters are long and hard. Dras, about 60 km west, is among the coldest inhabited places in India, with average winter lows around −20°C. Zoji La, on the Srinagar side, usually closes for part of the winter, though in recent years the Border Roads Organisation has kept it open far longer than before. Check the highway status before planning a winter trip. Many hotels close, and the Suru Valley beyond the lower villages is snowbound.
Dates to plan around
Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July brings ceremonies and heavy security to the war memorial, which may close to the public for several days around it. Muharram follows the Islamic calendar and moves about 11 days earlier each year. See events and festivals.
