Local tips
Confirm the day's opening hours in Dras or Kargil, as the army sets them and they change.
Avoid planning a visit in the days just before 26 July, when it may be closed for ceremonies.
Keep your voice down and dress plainly; this is a memorial, not a viewpoint.
Ask a soldier on duty to point out Tololing, Tiger Hill and Batra Top.
Photograph the wall and the peaks, but not army posts, vehicles or convoys outside the grounds.
Carry a warm layer, as Dras is noticeably colder and windier than Kargil.
Stop here on the Srinagar–Kargil drive, since it sits right on the highway.
Remembering 1999
In early 1999, Pakistani troops crossed the Line of Control and occupied peaks above the Srinagar–Leh highway around Dras and Kargil. The Indian Army's Operation Vijay took the heights back over the following months. The memorial at Dras, built by the army, honours the Indian soldiers who died. It sits on the highway just outside Dras, about 60 km west of Kargil.
What you will see
The centre of the memorial is Vijaypath, a pink sandstone wall with brass plates carrying the names of the soldiers who died in the operation. A tall national flag flies over the site. The Captain Manoj Pandey gallery, named after a young officer awarded the Param Vir Chakra after his death, displays photographs, weapons, letters and equipment from the war. Captured guns stand in the grounds.
The peaks above
What makes this memorial different is that the battlefield is in view. Tololing rises right above the site, and Tiger Hill and Point 4875, now called Batra Top, can be picked out from the grounds. Soldiers on duty often explain the fighting to visitors.
Visiting
Entry is free. Hours are set by the army and can change: some guides give a midday break and a weekly closure, so check the timings locally, ideally in Dras or Kargil the day before. The memorial may close to visitors for several days around Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July, when official ceremonies take place. This is a working military area. Take a soldier's instruction as final, and do not fly drones.
Around it
Dras town has dhabas and tea stalls; the Dras Valley Dhaba is listed for momos and hot drinks. Combine the memorial with the Dras Valley and a stop at Draupadi Kund, the Hindu pond on the Srinagar road.
