What to Wear in Kausani
Kausani is high enough that dawn is cold in every month of the year. Pack for sunrise on the ridge first, and the rest of the day follows.

Dress for sunrise
The main reason to come is the sunrise view, which means standing still outside before 6 am. Even in May the ridge can be chilly then. Bring a proper warm jacket, a woolly hat and something for your hands, whatever the month. You can take layers off once the sun is up.
October to February
Days are sunny and pleasant in October, but nights turn cold by November. From December to February nights often drop close to freezing, and snow falls on some days, usually in January and February. Pack thermals, a fleece or wool sweater, a down or padded jacket, gloves and warm socks. Rooms in small hotels are not always heated, so ask before booking.
March to June
Days are mild, and a shirt or light sweater is enough by late morning. Mornings and evenings still call for a jacket. The sun is strong at this height, so carry a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
July to September
Expect rain and mist most days. A light rain jacket, quick-drying clothes and shoes with good grip are more useful than an umbrella on steep village paths. Leeches can appear on forest trails, so long socks are worth it.
Walking shoes
The Rudradhari Falls path has rocky patches and small stream crossings. Wear closed shoes with a firm sole, not sandals or smooth trainers. The tea estate slopes are steep in places too.
Temples and the ashram
At the Baijnath temples and the Anasakti Ashram, cover shoulders and knees. Shoes come off at the shrines, so slip-on shoes and a pair of socks save time on cold stone.
Buying locally
Kausani has a local handloom unit that makes shawls and woollens, and the market sells caps and socks. For better choice of Kumaoni wool, look in Almora on the way up.
