Local tips
Book the elephant ride the day booking opens for your dates, as slots are very limited.
Expect the exact time slot to be confirmed only the evening before.
Wear trousers and warm layers, since the ride starts in the cold before sunrise.
Keep your camera on a short strap around your neck so both hands are free when mounting.
Leave large bags at your lodge, as there is no room for them on the elephant.
Follow the mahout's instructions and do not feed or touch the elephant's trunk.
Book a jeep safari afterwards in the same range to see more of it in daylight.
What the ride is
An elephant safari in Kaziranga is a short ride at first light into the tall grass, in a small group of elephants with their mahouts. From up high, you see over the grass and can get much closer to rhinos and buffalo than from a jeep. The animals are used to elephants and often keep grazing as you pass.
Where and when
Rides run in the Central Range, starting from Mihimukh near Kohora, and in the Western Range at Bagori. They usually operate from November to April, starting before or at sunrise, and each ride lasts about an hour. The exact slot is often confirmed only the day before.
Booking
Slots are very limited and are booked through the park's official online system with ID. They sell out quickly from December to February. Slot allocation for Indian and foreign visitors can differ between the two ranges, so check the rules for the current season when you book. Up to four people usually ride on one elephant.
What to expect
You climb onto the elephant from a raised platform. The seat is padded but the ride sways and jolts, so hold on with one hand. It is cold and damp at dawn in winter. Mahouts guide the route; you cannot choose where to go.
Weighing it up
Some travellers choose not to ride elephants on animal-welfare grounds. Kaziranga's elephants are park-managed and also used for patrols and rescue work, but it is a personal decision. A jeep safari and a watchtower view are good alternatives.
Photos
Use a fast shutter speed and a zoom lens that you can hold steady in one hand. The first light through the mist is the moment people remember.
