Local tips
Book safaris on the park's official online system as soon as your dates are fixed.
Mix ranges, for example Central for grassland and Agaratoli for birds, rather than repeating one.
Carry your original photo ID, as it is checked against your booking at the gate.
Bring binoculars, because many animals stay a few hundred metres from the track.
Keep your voice low in the jeep; noise sends rhinos and deer back into the grass.
Pack a small bag only, since there is little space on a shared safari jeep.
Check which ranges are open if you visit in October, as they reopen in stages.
What the park is
Kaziranga covers a long stretch of floodplain on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, with the Karbi Anglong hills to the south. It is mostly tall elephant grass, shallow lakes (beels) and patches of forest. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and a tiger reserve in 2006. The greater one-horned rhino is the headline, but wild elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, hog deer, tigers and over 450 bird species live here too.
The ranges
Visitors enter through four tourism ranges. The Central Range at Kohora is the most popular. The Western Range at Bagori has the densest rhino population and big stretches of water. The Eastern Range at Agaratoli is best for birds. The Burapahar Range at Ghorakati, the westernmost, has more forest and fewer visitors. Each range has its own gate and safari routes.
Seasons
The park closes during the monsoon, when floods cover much of it. It usually reopens in phases from 1 October and closes again around the end of May, depending on the rain. November to April is the main season.
Safaris
Jeep safaris run in morning and afternoon slots of about two hours, with a registered driver and a forest guard. Elephant rides run at dawn in the Central and Western ranges, usually from November to April. Both are booked through the park's official online system, and the popular slots fill quickly in winter.
Rules
Private vehicles cannot enter. Stay in the jeep except at marked watchtowers and viewpoints. Keep quiet, do not use flash, and do not feed or call to animals. No littering, no plastic, no drones. Speed limits apply inside the park and on the highway along its edge.
Planning
Book two or three safaris across different ranges. Kohora is the easiest base, about 200 km from Guwahati.
