Local tips

Take the afternoon slot for warmer light, then the morning slot the next day to compare.

Climb the watchtower quickly when the jeep stops, as the stop is short.

Ask your driver which beels have been busy that week, as sightings shift through the season.

Carry a warm layer on winter mornings, because the open jeep is cold at the start.

Arrive at the gate a little early so your permit checks are done before the slot starts.

Watch the edges of the beels for buffalo and deer coming down to drink.

Combine the safari with the Orchid Park the same afternoon, as both are near the gate.

The classic first safari

The Central Range starts at Kohora, where most of Kaziranga's hotels are, and it is the range most people see first. The jeep track runs for about 28 km through open grassland, past beels and into patches of forest, and the round trip takes about two hours. It gives a good mix of Kaziranga's landscapes in one drive.

What you are likely to see

Rhinos grazing close to the track, herds of wild water buffalo, swamp deer and hog deer, and wild elephants on many days. The beels hold storks, egrets and cormorants, with ducks in winter. Tigers live here too, but they are rarely seen in the tall grass.

Mihimukh and the elephant rides

Elephant rides in the Central Range start from Mihimukh, a short way inside the gate. The ride goes out at dawn into the grass, returns within about an hour, and is followed by breakfast and a jeep safari for many visitors.

The watchtower

The jeep route stops at a watchtower where you can climb up and look across the grassland and water. It is one of the few places you are allowed to step out of the vehicle, and it is the best spot for wide landscape photos.

When to go

The Central Range usually reopens within a few weeks of 1 October, after the Western Range. It is busiest from December to February. Afternoon slots end in warm light over the grass. Morning slots in winter start foggy and cold.

Nearby

The Orchid Park at Durgapur and the Kohora food stalls are a few minutes from the gate, and tea gardens line the highway on both sides.
