About Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest of deodar and oak between Dalhousie and Khajjiar. The name is often explained as "black cap", after the dark canopy of the trees. The forest is home to many birds and to deer and other mountain animals, although sightings of the larger ones are never guaranteed.
The usual way in is from Lakkar Mandi on the Dalhousie–Khajjiar road, where a barrier checks vehicles entering the forest track. From there, an easy walk of about 3 km through the trees leads towards Kalatop, making it a good stop on the drive between Dalhousie and Khajjiar.
