Plan a monsoon day →October and November
The rains fade through October, and the views across the ridges open up. Days are mild and nights start to turn cool. These are good months for Dzukou Valley, with dry trails and green meadows. Book early if your dates run into late November, because rooms and permits get busy before Hornbill.
December
Most visitors come for the Hornbill Festival from 1 to 10 December at Kisama. The town is full, prices rise and rooms sell out weeks ahead. The days are usually bright and clear, but nights are cold. Christmas follows soon after and is the biggest celebration of the year for most local families.
January to March
These are the driest months, with clear mornings and cold nights. Snow in town is rare, though the top of Mount Japfü, south of the city, can get snow in winter. The Angami festival of Sekrenyi usually starts around 25 February. Dzukou's meadows are brown in this season and very dry. Wildfires have broken out in the valley in several winters, most recently in January 2026, when trekking was stopped for some weeks. Check the trail is open before you go.
April and May
The hills warm up, and the first storms arrive in April. By May the rain is setting in. The first Dzukou lilies can appear in May, and early May is a good time to catch them before the heaviest rain.
June to September
Most of Kohima's rain falls in these months. Low cloud hides the views, and landslides can block the roads, including the highway to Dimapur. The upside is a green, quiet town and Dzukou in flower. Keep your plans flexible and allow a spare day for delays.
Planning around permits
Whatever the season, apply for your Inner Line Permit before you travel. In late November, apply a few weeks ahead, as the portal is busiest just before Hornbill.
Questions
Kohima — FAQ
When do the Dzukou lilies flower?
The pink Dzukou lily usually blooms from about May into June or July, and other wildflowers carry on to September. That is also the wettest season, so expect mud and slippery steps.
Does it snow in Kohima?
Snow in the town itself is rare. The summit of Mount Japfü, south of the city, can get snow between December and February.
Is Kohima worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only if you are flexible. The town is green and quiet, but rain, cloud and landslides can close roads and hide the views. Allow extra time for the drive from Dimapur.
How far ahead should I book for Hornbill?
As early as you can, ideally a couple of months ahead for rooms. Apply for your Inner Line Permit a few weeks before you travel, as the portal gets busy in late November.
