What to Wear in Kolhapur
Kolhapur is warm for most of the year and wet in the monsoon, so light cotton does most of the work. The one thing to plan for is the Ambabai temple, which asks visitors to dress modestly.

Dressing for Ambabai
The Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) temple has a dress code for visitors. Shorts, short skirts, sleeveless tops and cropped T-shirts are not allowed for darshan. Men do well in trousers and a shirt or a kurta, and women in a salwar kameez, a saree or a long skirt with a covered top. A light scarf or dupatta is useful for covering shoulders. Rules can be tightened around festivals, so read the notice at the gate. The same clothes work at Jyotiba.
Everyday clothes
Kolhapur is not as hot as the inland Deccan. Summer days usually reach the low to mid 30s °C and rarely go much higher, but the sun is strong, so loose cotton in pale colours, a hat and sunglasses make sense from March to May. From November to February the days are warm and the early mornings cool, so carry a light sweater or shawl for dawn at the temple or on Panhala.
Monsoon
From June to September the rain is heavy, especially up at Panhala and Jyotiba. Pack quick-dry clothes, a proper rain jacket and shoes with grip. Leather sandals, including Kolhapuri chappals, do not like being soaked, so keep them for dry days.
Kolhapuri chappals
The Kolhapuri chappal is a hand-stitched leather sandal made in and around the city for centuries, and it received a GI tag in 2019. The lanes near Mahadwar Road are full of chappal shops. New pairs are stiff, so buy a few days before a long walk, and ask the shop to soften the straps. Real leather smells of leather; very cheap, shiny pairs are often not.
Traditional dress
For a festival or a photo, women here wear the nine-yard nauvari saree with the gold Kolhapuri saaj necklace, and men wear a dhoti-kurta with a bright pheta turban.
Questions
Kolhapur — FAQ
Is there a dress code at the Kolhapur Mahalaxmi temple?
Yes. Shorts, short skirts, sleeveless tops and cropped T-shirts are not allowed. Wear trousers or a long skirt with a covered top, and check the notice at the gate for any change.
Where can I buy genuine Kolhapuri chappals?
The chappal shops around Mahadwar Road near the Ambabai temple are the best-known place. Look for soft, natural leather and hand stitching, and try several pairs, because sizes vary.
Do I need warm clothes in Kolhapur in winter?
Only a light layer. Winter days are warm, but early mornings can feel cool, especially on the hills at Panhala and Jyotiba. A sweater or shawl is enough.
Can I wear jeans to the Ambabai temple?
Ordinary full-length jeans or trousers are fine. Low-waist jeans, shorts and cropped tops are among the things the dress code turns away, so pair jeans with a shirt or kurta that covers you.
