Best time to visit Konark

Konark is at its best from November to February, when the stone courtyard is bearable at midday and the coast is dry. Two festival weeks fall in that window.

November to February

Dry, warm days and pleasant evenings. This is when the Sun Temple is comfortable to walk around for a couple of hours and Chandrabhaga's sunrise is clear. The Konark Festival runs from 1 to 5 December, and Chandrabhaga Mela falls on Magha Saptami in January or February. Rooms in the village are limited, so book early for both.

March to mid-June

Hot and humid, with temperatures in the mid-30s °C and heavy air. The open stone courtyard is punishing after 10 am. Visit at opening, rest through the afternoon and return for the light and sound show after dark.

Mid-June to September

The southwest monsoon usually reaches the Odisha coast in mid-June, not July. Rain comes in heavy bursts, the sea is rough and bathing is restricted. The upside is a green landscape along the Marine Drive and very few visitors. Puri's Rath Yatra, in late June or July, fills hotels across the region, including Konark's.

October and November: the cyclone window

October and November are the months when Bay of Bengal cyclones most often hit this coast. Most weeks are fine, but if a warning is issued, services close and visitors are moved inland. Check the weather service before and during your trip.

A note on the calendar cards

Some summaries list Rath Yatra as a Konark event. It happens in Puri, about 35 km away, and affects Konark only through crowds and room rates. The Konark calendar's own fixtures are the December festival and Magha Saptami.

In short

  • Easiest weather: November to February.
  • For festivals: early December and Magha Saptami.
  • Quietest: August and September.
