The temple at opening
At opening time the sun is low in the east, and the carving on the east-facing front and the stone horses has strong shadows that show every figure. Walk round clockwise and keep the south side for a little later, when the light reaches along the row of wheels. By 10 am the courtyard fills and the light turns flat.
One wheel, not twenty-four
The instinct is to get the whole temple in. The better photo is often a single wheel, shot straight on with the spokes filling the frame. The wheels on the south side are the most photographed; look for one without scaffolding or people sitting in front. Low morning or late afternoon light gives depth to the carved rim.
The horses and the lions
The seven stone horses that pull the chariot are at the front, several of them broken. At the east entrance, stone lions stand on elephants, which stand on people. It is the first sculpture you see and the most copied.
Chandrabhaga and Ramchandi
Chandrabhaga faces east, so the sun rises over the sea. Fishing boats and the long empty beach give you space that Puri does not. Ramchandi is best in the afternoon, when the temple, the river mouth and the dunes are lit from the west.
Practical notes
- Tripods may need permission at the Sun Temple; handheld is simpler.
- Do not climb on the plinth or sit on the wheels for photos; guards will stop you.
- The ASI museum has rules on photography inside; ask at the entrance.
- Drones are not allowed over the monument.
Each spot has its own page with a best hour and a place to stand. Start with the wheel.
