Local tips

Arrive before sunrise; the sun comes up over the sea.

Paddle rather than swim, and only near a lifeguard post.

Check the Magha Saptami date; crowds and road closures are heavy that morning.

Walk the beach during the sand art festival in the first week of December.

Eat fish curry at a busy shack by the beach at lunchtime.

Wear flip-flops; the sand heats up fast by late morning.

Combine it with the Sun Temple, about 3 km away.

Konark's beach

Chandrabhaga is about 3 km east of the Sun Temple, where the road meets the sea. It is a long, open beach, cleaner and much quieter than Puri, with fishing boats, a few shacks and plenty of space. It faces east, so the sun rises out of the Bay of Bengal.

The legend

The beach takes its name from a river that once met the sea here. Tradition says Samba, a son of Krishna, was cured of leprosy after years of worshipping the sun at this spot, which is why the place is linked with Surya and with the temple nearby.

Chandrabhaga Mela

On Magha Saptami, in January or February, pilgrims arrive through the night to bathe in the sea at sunrise and worship the sun. It is one of the largest gatherings on the Odisha coast, with a fair on the sand and heavy traffic on the Marine Drive.

Sand art in December

From 1 to 5 December, alongside the Konark Festival, the International Sand Art Festival fills part of the beach with sculptures by artists from India and abroad.

Safety in the water

The sea here has strong currents, like the rest of this coast. Paddle rather than swim, stay where lifeguards are posted, and stay out completely when the sea is rough or a red flag is up. In the monsoon, bathing is often restricted.

Food

The Chandrabhaga beach shacks serve fish curry and snacks, and are best at lunchtime.
