About Airavatesvara Temple

The Airavatesvara Temple stands at Darasuram, about 4 km from Kumbakonam. It was built by the Chola king Rajaraja II in the 12th century and is one of the three Great Living Chola Temples on the UNESCO World Heritage list, with the temples at Thanjavur and Gangaikondacholapuram. It is still a working temple, with daily worship in its sanctum.

It is smaller than the great temple at Thanjavur, but the carving is finer. One hall is built as a stone chariot with wheels and horses, and the walls and pillars are covered in small, detailed sculptures of dancers, musicians and stories. The stone steps near the entrance are known as the musical steps. The temple is usually much quieter than the town temples, which makes it one of the best places for photos in the area.
