About Kumbakonam
Kumbakonam is a temple town in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu, about 40 km from Thanjavur. It has dozens of temples packed into a small area, from the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, whose pot-shaped lingam gives the town its name, to the Sarangapani Temple with its 11-tier gopuram. At its centre is the Mahamaham Tank, where huge crowds gather to bathe during the Mahamaham festival, held once every 12 years.
The town is also a good base for the countryside around it. Darasuram, with the 12th-century Airavatesvara Temple, is a few kilometres away, and Swamimalai, known for its Murugan temple and bronze-casting workshops, is a short drive west. Many pilgrims come to visit the nine Navagraha temples scattered across the delta. Between temple visits, stop for a Kumbakonam degree coffee and a breakfast of adai avial or idli with kadappa.
