About Mahamaham Tank

The Mahamaham Tank is a large temple tank in the centre of Kumbakonam. Stone steps lead down to the water on every side, and it is ringed by 16 small mandapas, or pavilions, with carved roofs. Wells inside the tank are believed to hold the waters of India's holy rivers.

Every year during Masi Magam, usually in February or March, deities from the town's temples are brought here and pilgrims bathe in the tank. Once every 12 years this becomes the Mahamaham festival, when huge crowds gather for a holy dip. The last Mahamaham was in 2016 and the next is expected in 2028. On other days it is an open, calm space among the busy temple streets.
