About Adi Kumbeswarar Temple

Adi Kumbeswarar is the main Shiva temple of Kumbakonam and sits in the heart of the old town. Its lingam is pot-shaped, and legend links it to the divine pot (kumbha) that gives Kumbakonam its name. The tallest of its gopurams, on the east side, rises 11 tiers and is covered in painted figures.

Inside, long pillared corridors lead past many smaller shrines. The sixteen-pillared hall from the Vijayanagara period is known for a single stone carved with the 27 stars and 12 signs of the zodiac. The temple is busy with worshippers through the day and is a short walk from the Mahamaham Tank and Sarangapani Temple.
