Local tips

Leave Lachung at first light, as cloud usually covers the peaks by late morning.

Walk down to the riverbank for the widest view up the valley.

Do not pick flowers or rhododendron branches, because the valley is a protected sanctuary.

Carry water in a reusable bottle, since packaged water in plastic bottles is not sold in Lachung.

Use the toilets in Lachung before leaving, as there are no proper facilities in the valley.

Wear waterproof boots, because the meadow is often wet from snowmelt.

Ask your driver in advance whether Zero Point is open that day, since it is booked as an add-on.

The valley

Yumthang is a wide, flat meadow at about 3,560 m, around 25 km north of Lachung. The Lachung river runs through it, pine and fir forest climbs the slopes, and snow peaks close off every side. It is often called the Valley of Flowers of Sikkim. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary covers the approach, and a hot spring sits across a footbridge in the valley. A forest rest house is the only permanent building.

When it looks its best

Flowers bloom from late winter to about mid-June. The rhododendrons usually peak from late April to mid-May, followed by primulas, poppies and iris on the meadow. In summer, herders bring yaks and cattle up to graze. October brings clear skies and autumn colour. From December to March heavy snow covers the valley, and the road can close.

Getting there

You need the North Sikkim permit, arranged through a registered Sikkim tour operator, and you must travel in the operator's vehicle. Cars leave Lachung around dawn, and the drive usually takes one and a half to two hours. Indian nationals can continue to Zero Point, usually as an extra on the same trip. Foreign nationals are allowed as far as Yumthang but not beyond.

On the ground

Stalls near the parking area sell tea, noodles and snacks and may offer yak rides; if you ride, check the animal is well cared for. Stay on paths, as the meadow is part of a sanctuary and its plants are protected. There are no proper toilets, so use the ones in Lachung before you leave.

Weather

Mornings are clear more often than afternoons. By midday cloud often hides the peaks, and it gets dark early here, so drivers like to be back in Lachung by early afternoon.
