Best Photo Spots in Lachung

Photography around Lachung is a morning job. Cloud usually gathers on the peaks by late morning, so the valley trip starts in the dark and the best light comes in the first few hours.

Start early, shoot early

Drivers leave Lachung for Yumthang around dawn, and that is the right time for photos too. Clear skies are most likely in the first hours of daylight, and snow looks crisp before the sun gets high. By early afternoon mist often fills the valley and the peaks disappear. Keep a spare battery in an inside pocket, as the cold drains them fast.

Yumthang and Zero Point

Yumthang Valley is a flat, open meadow with the river running through it and snow peaks on every side. Walk down to the bank for a long view up the valley. Zero Point, higher up at the end of the civilian road, is bare snow and rock with little colour, so a bright jacket helps any portrait. It is open to Indian nationals only.

Flowers and water

The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary lines the road to Yumthang. From about late April to mid-May whole slopes turn red, pink and cream, and drivers will stop if you ask. The Yumthang Hot Springs sit across a small footbridge; on a cold morning the steam shows well against the dark trees.

In the village

Lachung Monastery is the one frame from the village itself, with prayer flags, the gompa roof and the ridge behind. The village is also pretty at dusk, when woodsmoke rises from the roofs and lights come on across the river. Ask before photographing people, and ask the monks before taking any photo inside the prayer hall.

Border rules

This is a border area with army camps along the road. Do not photograph military vehicles, posts or bridges, and keep a drone at home unless you have written permission. Soldiers may ask you to delete photos taken near installations.

Questions

Lachung — FAQ

Can I photograph the army camps on the way to Yumthang?

No. Military installations, vehicles and bridges in this border area should not be photographed. Keep your camera down as you pass them.

When are the rhododendrons in flower for photos?

Usually from about late April to mid-May, though the timing moves with the snow each year. Ask your operator in early April how the season is shaping up.

Can I fly a drone at Yumthang or Zero Point?

Not without permission. North Sikkim is a protected border area, and drones need clearance that tourists rarely get. Leave it in Gangtok.

Which spot is best on a cloudy day?

The monastery and the village. Cloud hides the peaks at Yumthang and Zero Point, but low mist over the wooden houses and prayer flags can make a moody photo.
