About the monastery

Lachung Monastery, or Lachung Gompa, was founded in 1880. It belongs to the Nyingma school, the oldest of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It stands on the slope above the village, with prayer flags strung around it and a long view over the wooden houses, fields and the Lachung river below.

What to see

Prayer wheels line the entrance, and visitors turn them as they walk round clockwise. Inside the prayer hall are painted walls, statues and butter lamps. The monastery is at the centre of village life, and monks and residents come in and out through the day.

The masked dance

Once a year the monastery holds a cham, a masked dance performed by monks in the courtyard. The date follows the Tibetan lunar calendar and changes each year, so ask your hotel or operator in advance if you want to see it.

How to visit

Entry is free. Walk round clockwise, take off your shoes before the prayer hall, and cover shoulders and knees. Keep quiet if prayers are going on, and ask before taking photos inside or photographing monks. Hours are not fixed, and the hall may be locked when the caretaker is out.

Getting there

The monastery is a short drive from the village, or a steep walk of about half an hour. Most visitors go in the afternoon after returning from Yumthang Valley, or early on the morning they leave. Being in the village, it needs no extra permit beyond your North Sikkim permit.

Nearby

Walk back down through the village lanes to see the old wooden houses and gardens. The views across the valley are best when the cloud lifts in the early morning.
