Local tips
Tell your driver before leaving Lachung that you want to stop for the rhododendrons.
Stop only at safe pull-offs, as the road is narrow and busy in spring.
Do not pick flowers or break branches, because the sanctuary is protected.
Look at the lower slopes first early in the season, as they bloom before the higher ones.
Carry a lens or phone mode for close-ups of single flower clusters.
Go early in the morning if you want to see birds.
Take all rubbish back with you, including tea cups and wrappers.
About the sanctuary
The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects the forested slopes on the approach to Yumthang Valley, north of Lachung. It was set up in 1984 and is known for its rhododendrons, with dozens of species recorded here, from tall trees to low shrubs. Sikkim's state tree is a rhododendron, and this is one of the best places in the state to see them.
When to see the flowers
The rhododendrons usually flower from late April to mid-May, with lower slopes coming out first. Colours run from deep red to pink, mauve, yellow and cream. The exact timing moves with the snow each year, so a late winter means a later bloom. Outside the flowering season, the sanctuary is still a fine drive through fir and rhododendron forest, with autumn colour in October.
Wildlife
The forest is part of a larger protected Himalayan landscape. Birders look for species such as the wood snipe and the hoary-throated barwing. Early morning is the best time for birds.
Visiting
There is no separate visit to plan. The road to Yumthang Valley runs through the sanctuary, so you see it on the same permit and in the same vehicle. Ask your driver to stop at a safe pull-off where the flowers are thickest; most will, but they also watch the time, as the valley trip runs to a schedule.
Rules
It is a protected area. Do not pick flowers or break off branches, stay near the road and on paths, and take all rubbish back with you. Do not light fires or play loud music.
Photo tips
Flowers look best in soft light, so an overcast morning is not a loss here. Mix wide shots of whole hillsides with close shots of single flower clusters against dark leaves.
