What to Wear in Lachung
Dress for the coldest place you will visit, not for Lachung itself. Zero Point is cold even in summer, and the drive there starts before sunrise.

Layers, not one big coat
The day starts in the dark at Lachung, climbs through Yumthang and may end in the snow at Zero Point, then drops back down by afternoon. Wear a thermal base, a fleece or wool sweater, and a down or padded jacket on top. Add or remove layers as the car climbs. Avoid cotton next to the skin: once it is damp from snow or sweat, it stays cold.
Hands, head and feet
Gloves and a warm cap matter more than an extra sweater. Snow and wet ground at Zero Point soak through trainers within minutes, so wear waterproof boots with a good grip, and pack dry socks for the drive back. Sunglasses are worth carrying, because snow glare at altitude is strong on clear days.
Renting gear
Shops in Lachung usually rent heavy jackets and snow boots for the day trip, and drivers know where to go. The quality varies, so check that boots fit and zips work before you pay. If you want your own kit, Gangtok has more choice.
Season by season
In winter, from December to February, pack your warmest clothes: nights in Lachung drop well below freezing. In spring, days in the village are mild, but Yumthang and Zero Point still need full winter layers. In the monsoon, add a rain jacket and quick-drying trousers. In autumn, mornings are sharp and clear, and a down jacket is still needed higher up.
At the monastery
Cover your shoulders and knees at Lachung Monastery. You will take your shoes off before entering the prayer hall, so slip-on shoes or boots that unlace quickly help.
Traditional dress
The bakhu, also called kho, is the wrap-around robe worn by Sikkim's Bhutia and Lepcha communities, tied at the waist over a silk blouse. Women often add a striped apron, the pangden. You will see it at festivals and on older residents. Hand-woven woollen shawls and caps from the hills also make practical, warm gifts.
Colours for photos
Red, maroon and mustard stand out against snow and grey rock. Against spring flowers, cream or dark green works better than more red.
