Local tips

Leave Leh by around 6 am to reach Thiksey in time for morning prayers.

Sit at the back during prayers and keep your phone on silent.

Accept butter tea if it is offered, and leave the cup full if you do not want more.

Take off your shoes at each hall door, so wear shoes that slip on and off easily.

Climb to the rooftop for the view over the Indus valley and the green fields of Shey.

Visit Shey Palace on the way back, as it sits on the same road.

Check local listings for the Gustor dates if you are in Leh in October or November.

A monastery built up a hill

Thiksey Monastery rises in white and red tiers up a rocky hill about 19 km east of Leh, above the Indus valley, at about 3,600 m. It belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, the same order as the Dalai Lama, and was founded in the 15th century. The main building is twelve storeys high, and its shape is often compared with the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Monks' houses spread down the hillside below it.

Morning prayers

The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the monks gather in the assembly hall for prayers. You hear horns and chanting, and young monks may bring round butter tea. Visitors can sit quietly at the back. The start time shifts with the season, usually around 6 to 7 am, so ask at your guesthouse the evening before.

The Maitreya statue

The monastery's best-known image is a seated statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, about 15 m tall. It rises through two floors, so you see the face from an upper gallery. It was made in the 1970s to mark a visit by the Dalai Lama in 1970. The monastery also has halls with old wall paintings, a library of scriptures and a small museum.

Visiting

The climb to the main courtyard is steep. Take your shoes off at the doors, walk clockwise, and do not touch the paintings or statues. Some rooms do not allow photographs; follow the signs and never use flash. There is a small entry fee.

Festival and nearby

Thiksey's Gustor festival, with masked dances, falls late in the ninth Tibetan month, around October or November. Shey Palace is on the road back to Leh, and Hemis lies further south-east, so many visitors see all three in one day. Thiksey is at about the same height as Leh, so it is a good outing on your second day.
