What's on in Lonavala

Lonavala's calendar is shaped less by one big festival than by the rain and the weekends. The Ekvira temple at Karla draws the largest religious crowds, and the monsoon draws everyone else.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Lonavala right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Lonavala

Lonavala's calendar runs through most of the year, with the busiest weeks in the clear, comfortable months and a quieter stretch in the heaviest rain. Broadly, Oct – Feb and Jun – Sep is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Across Maharashtra

Ganesh Chaturthi

🗓️ August–September

Maharashtra's biggest festival: clay Ganesh idols in homes and neighbourhood pandals for up to ten days, then carried in processions to the nearest river, lake or sea.

Planning: Immersion days close roads and fill the ghats and beaches; the largest crowds by far are in Mumbai and Pune.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Ekvira Devi palkhi, spring

The biggest religious gathering near Lonavala is the palkhi of the goddess Ekvira at Karla, held in the Hindu month of Chaitra, which usually falls in late March or April. Koli and Agri families come up from the coast in large groups, often with drums and in traditional dress. The steps up the hill and the road below get very crowded. It is a colourful time to see the temple, but a poor day to visit Karla Caves in peace.

Navratri, autumn

The nine nights of Navratri, in September or October, bring another rush of pilgrims to the Ekvira temple. Expect queues for darshan and slow traffic on the road to Karla, especially on weekends.

Ganesh Chaturthi, August or September

Maharashtra's biggest festival is celebrated in Lonavala with idols in homes and in neighbourhood pandals. The town is small, so it is quieter here than in Mumbai or Pune. The larger effect for visitors is on the roads: immersion days jam city traffic at both ends of the trip.

Firefly season, May to June

Just before the monsoon, fireflies gather in their thousands in the trees around Rajmachi. Several trekking groups run night walks at this time. It is a natural event rather than a festival, and the dates depend on the weather, roughly mid-May to mid-June.

The monsoon weekends

From late June to September, Lonavala's real crowd event happens every weekend. Visitors from Mumbai and Pune head for Bhushi Dam, Tiger's Leap and the forts. Traffic backs up for kilometres, and the police sometimes restrict vehicles near the busiest spots. If the district issues orders closing viewpoints or water spots, they apply to everyone, and they are lifted once the rain eases.

Long weekends and year end

Diwali, Christmas and New Year fill hotels and villas, and room rates rise. Book ahead for any Friday-to-Monday holiday.
