October to November

This is the easiest time. Days are warm, evenings are pleasant and the monsoon haze has cleared. Diwali, the kite-flying day of Jamghat just after it, and the Lucknow Literature Festival usually fall in these weeks, and Lucknow Mahotsav often begins in late November. Book rooms early around Diwali.

December to February

Days are mild, around 20–25 °C, but nights can drop to 3–7 °C. From mid-December to late January, dense fog is common. It often hides the monuments until late morning and regularly delays trains and flights, so leave slack in your plans and avoid tight connections. This is also makkhan malai season, and the kebab shops are at their busiest on cold evenings.

March

A good month before the heat arrives. Holi falls in March in most years, and the old city celebrates it loudly in the mornings. Keep your camera in a plastic bag if you plan to be out.

April to June

It is hot. Temperatures climb to 40–45 °C in May and early June, with dry, dusty winds. Visit the monuments at opening, rest indoors in the afternoon, and go out again after sunset. On the plus side, hotels are cheaper, and in the second half of May and June Bada Mangal fills the city with Tuesday food stalls. Malihabad's Dasheri mangoes, grown just outside Lucknow, come into season in June and July.

Late June to September

The monsoon usually arrives in the last week of June. Showers cool the air, and the Residency's lawns turn green, but low-lying roads and old-city lanes can flood after heavy rain. Severe rain and flooding have hit parts of Uttar Pradesh in the monsoon, so check local weather news before you travel. Humidity stays high into early October.

Planning around the calendar

Muharram moves about eleven days earlier each year and falls in June in 2026 and 2027. The imambaras host mourning gatherings then, and tourist access can be restricted, so check before you build a trip around them. See what's on and what to wear for each season.
