Local tips
Check the day's ferry timings in advance, as they change with the water level.
Arrive at Nimati Ghat at least half an hour early, earlier with a car.
Catch an early afternoon boat at the latest, as the last ferries leave by mid-afternoon.
Allow for fog delays on winter mornings, especially before a flight from Jorhat.
Sit on the upper deck for the best views of the river and sandbanks.
Keep your phone and camera in a dry bag in case of spray or rain.
Have a shared vehicle or guesthouse pickup arranged on the island side, as the landing is some way from Garamur.
The way onto the island
For now, the ferry is the main way to reach Majuli. Boats leave from Nimati Ghat, about 15 km north of Jorhat town, and land on the Kamalabari side of the island. The crossing takes about an hour, sometimes longer when the boat has to steer around sandbanks. It is one of the best parts of the trip: a wide, slow river, fishing boats, sandbars and birds.
Timings
Several ferries run each day, usually from early morning to mid-afternoon, with the last boats leaving in the afternoon. Timings change with the season and the water level, and services can be suspended in bad weather or when the river is very high. Check the current timetable the day before, locally or through your guesthouse.
Cars and bikes
Larger roll-on roll-off boats carry cars, motorbikes and even trucks. Space is limited, so arrive early if you are taking a vehicle. Loading can take time, and a vehicle ticket costs extra.
Fog and floods
From December to February, thick morning fog can delay the first boats for hours. In the monsoon, from June to September, strong currents and high water can suspend crossings. Build a buffer into any trip that ends with a flight or train from Jorhat.
The bridge
A road bridge between Jorhat and Majuli is under construction, but work stalled after the contractor withdrew and was due to restart in late 2025. It is not expected to open soon. Plan on the ferry.
On board
Buy tickets at the ghat. Seats fill quickly; the upper deck has the best view. Tea and snacks are sold at the ghat. Keep an eye on bags, especially during boarding.
