About Mandawa Fort
Mandawa Fort was built in 1755 by Thakur Nawal Singh to guard a stop on the caravan routes that passed through Shekhawati. The town grew up around it as traders settled here, which is why the fort still sits at the centre of Mandawa. Its painted main gateway, turrets and high walls look out over the rooftops of the old town.
Today the fort is a heritage hotel, so it is not a museum or a public monument. Non-guests can often see the gateway and the courtyard, and some visit to eat at its restaurant, but access can change, so ask at the gate. The painted arch at the entrance is one of the most photographed spots in Mandawa.
