About Jahaz Mahal

The Jahaz Mahal, or Ship Palace, is Mandu's best-known monument. It is a long, narrow, two-storey palace, about 120 m long and 15 m wide, built between two lakes, Munj Talao and Kapur Talao. When the lakes are full, the building seems to float on the water like a ship. It dates from the late 15th century and is said to have been built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji to house his large harem.

The palace has arched halls on the ground floor, domed pavilions on the roof and lotus-shaped pools on both floors. It is part of the Royal Enclave, along with the Hindola Mahal, the Taveli Mahal and the Champa Baoli. The palace looks its best in the monsoon and the weeks after, when the lakes are full and the plateau is green.
