What's on in Matheran

Matheran has no big festival of its own. What shapes a visit is the holiday calendar of Mumbai and Pune, which decides how full the train, the bazaar and the hotels will be.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Matheran right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Matheran

Matheran's calendar runs through most of the year, with the busiest weeks in the clear, comfortable months and a quieter stretch in the heaviest rain. Broadly, Oct – Feb and Mar – May is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Across Maharashtra

Ganesh Chaturthi

🗓️ August–September

Maharashtra's biggest festival: clay Ganesh idols in homes and neighbourhood pandals for up to ten days, then carried in processions to the nearest river, lake or sea.

Planning: Immersion days close roads and fill the ghats and beaches; the largest crowds by far are in Mumbai and Pune.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

A small town's calendar

Matheran is home to a few thousand people, so its festivals are local and small. Most visitors come for the hill itself, and the dates that matter are the ones when city families are off work and school.

Maha Shivaratri

In February or March, Maha Shivaratri is the main day at the Pisarnath Mahadev temple beside Charlotte Lake, the village deity's shrine. Local families come to pray through the day. It falls in the dry season, so it is a pleasant time to visit.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, is Maharashtra's biggest festival, and homes and a few public pandals in Matheran mark it. It falls in the monsoon, though, and it is not the town's peak. The huge processions and immersions happen in Mumbai and Pune, where roads close on immersion days.

Diwali to New Year

The Diwali holidays in October or November and the week from Christmas to New Year are Matheran's busiest stretches. The weather is dry and clear, the toy train is usually running again, and hotels fill early. Book rooms and train seats well ahead.

Holi and summer holidays

Holi, in March, is played in the bazaar and at hotels. May school holidays bring a steady stream of families escaping the heat of the plains.

Monsoon weekends

From June to September, weekend crowds come for the rain and mist. Weekdays in the monsoon are the quietest days of the year.

Planning around the calendar

Most festival dates follow the lunar calendar and move each year, so check them before you book. If you want quiet paths, avoid long weekends and come midweek. See the best time to visit for the weather in each season.
