What to Wear in Mussoorie
Mussoorie is mild by day for much of the year and cold once the sun drops. Dress in layers you can take off and put back on.

Spring and summer: March to June
Days on the Mall are pleasant in a T-shirt or light shirt, but evenings turn cool quickly, even in May. Carry a sweater or fleece and a light jacket every day. The sun is strong at this height, so pack sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen. Kempty Falls is much lower and warmer than the town, so bring a change of clothes and a small towel if you plan to wade.
Monsoon: July to September
Rain is heavy and often lasts all day. A proper rain jacket works better than an umbrella on windy ridges. Wear quick-dry trousers and shoes with a good grip, as the stone paths and steps get slippery. Pack spare socks.
Autumn: October and November
These are clear, crisp months. A sweater and a warm jacket cover most days, with a hat for the evenings. If you plan to watch the winter line at sunset, bring an extra layer, as the temperature falls fast once the sun goes.
Winter: December to February
Bring a real winter jacket, thermals, gloves, a woollen hat and a scarf. Nights are close to freezing and hotel rooms can be cold. Snow comes a few times in most winters, and the steep lanes to Landour can turn icy, so wear boots with a good sole.
Shoes
Shoes matter more than anything else here. Mussoorie is a walking town, and Landour, Lal Tibba and Gun Hill all involve steep climbs. Wear comfortable walking shoes or boots, and leave heels at home.
Local wear
Handwoven woollen shawls and caps from the Garhwal hills are sold along the Mall and make a warm layer for evenings. The yellow pichhora drape is worn by Garhwali women at weddings and festivals; if you buy one, keep it for those occasions rather than as a casual scarf.
Temples and churches
Cover shoulders and knees at temples, remove your shoes where asked, and dress plainly for church services.
Questions
Mussoorie — FAQ
Do I need a jacket in Mussoorie in May?
Yes, for the evenings. Days are warm, but once the sun sets the ridge cools quickly. A fleece or light jacket is enough.
What shoes are best for Landour?
Walking shoes or boots with a good grip. The lanes up to Landour are steep, and some are slippery after rain.
What should I bring for Kempty Falls?
A change of clothes, a small towel and sandals with a strap, if you plan to wade. There are shops at the falls, but prices are high and choice is limited.
