Local tips
Check the day before you go, because the museum is closed on Fridays even though the ruins are open.
Visit after the ruins, when the seals and household objects will match what you have just seen.
Ask at the ticket desk whether photography is allowed in the galleries that day.
Look for the clay seals stamped with the name of the Nalanda monastery, the university's official stamp.
Spend the hottest part of a summer day here instead of on the open brick.
Take a slow look at the small bronzes, which are easy to walk past but among the finest pieces.
Leave big bags in your vehicle, as museums of this kind often ask you to deposit them at the entrance.
Why go
The ruins show you walls; the museum shows you what people used and worshipped inside them. Run by the Archaeological Survey of India, it sits just across the road from the entrance to the ruins and holds objects found during excavation. It is small, and an hour is enough.
What is inside
The best pieces are the Buddhist and Hindu sculptures of the Pala period, from about the 8th to the 12th century. Look for the bronze figures of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, some small enough to hold in a hand, and the dark stone images of Tara, Avalokiteshvara and Hindu gods. There are clay seals stamped with the name of the university, coins, pottery, and burnt rice grains recovered from storerooms. A large Buddha image and inscribed stone pieces sit in the main gallery.
Visiting
The museum is usually open from around 9 or 10 am to 5 pm and is closed on Fridays. There is a small ticket fee. Timings have varied over the years, so check before you go, especially if you are on a tight plan.
Do the museum after the ruins if you can. Once you have walked the monastery courtyards, the seals and lamps make much more sense. In summer, it is also a cooler place to spend the hot middle of the day.
Photography
Rules on cameras inside have changed over time, and many visitors report that photography is not allowed in the galleries. Ask at the entrance. You can photograph the building and garden outside.
Nearby
The ruins are directly opposite, and the Xuanzang Memorial Hall is a short drive away.
