Local tips

Book your car the night before, as nothing runs on the plateau at dawn.

Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to catch the valley mist at its thickest.

Wear a warm jacket, hat and gloves in winter; dawn on the ridge is very cold.

Carry a flask of tea, since there are no stalls at the viewpoint.

Choose Koel View over Prabhat Vihar if you want a horizon without trees in the way.

Use a torch on the path in the dark and watch for uneven ground at the edge.

Follow sunrise with a dhuska breakfast in town before the falls.

The view

Koel View Point looks out over the valley of the Koel river, which flows below the western edge of the plateau. On a good morning, mist settles in the valley and the hills rise out of it in soft layers, while the first sun lights the ridge tops. It is quieter than Magnolia Point and feels more remote.

Dawn here

Be at the viewpoint 20–30 minutes before sunrise, when the mist is thickest and the light starts to change. Winter mornings are the most reliable for mist and clear skies, though they are also the coldest. After sunrise the mist usually lifts within an hour.

Netarhat's other dawn spot is the sunrise point in the grounds of the Prabhat Vihar lodge. Trees partly block the horizon there, so many photographers prefer Koel View for a clearer outlook. Some visitors also come to Koel View in the evening; the valley light is soft then too.

Getting there

The viewpoint is a short drive from the centre of Netarhat. Arrange a car the night before, as nothing runs at dawn. The road is unlit, so go carefully in the dark.

What to bring

A warm jacket, hat and gloves in winter, a flask of tea, and a torch. There are no stalls. A tripod helps in low light.

After sunrise

Head back for a dhuska breakfast in town, then spend the day at the Ghaghri falls and the dam.
