Best Photo Spots in Netarhat
Netarhat is built around two moments: dawn and dusk. Plan your photos around those hours and use the middle of the day for the waterfalls.

Sunset: Magnolia Point
Magnolia Sunset Point is about 10 km from the centre on a ridge facing west. On clear winter evenings the sun sinks behind layers of forested hills, and the ridges turn blue as the light goes. Arrive at least 45 minutes early to claim a spot on the railings — on weekends the viewpoint fills. A small statue near the ridge recalls the legend of Magnolia and the cowherd.
Leave soon after the sun goes down. The drive back is on dark forest roads.
Sunrise: Koel View Point and Prabhat Vihar
Koel View Point looks over the valley of the Koel river. At first light, mist often lies in the valley and the hills rise out of it in bands. The sunrise point in the grounds of the Prabhat Vihar lodge is the other dawn favourite; trees block part of the view there, so some photographers prefer Koel View. Either way, be in place 20 minutes before sunrise and dress warmly.
The waterfalls
Upper Ghaghri Falls is small and close, a cascade in the forest just below Netarhat Dam. Lower Ghaghri Falls is much taller and needs a short walk from the road. Both are best from August to November, after the rains. Midday works for these, since the forest shades them.
The dam
The reservoir is calm, and on still mornings it reflects the forest. It sits close to Upper Ghaghri, so the two combine.
Practical tips
Winter light is clearest, but haze from cooking fires can soften the horizon. In the monsoon, clouds often hide both sunrise and sunset, though the forest is at its greenest. Pack a tripod for dawn and a head torch for the walk back from the viewpoints.
Questions
Netarhat — FAQ
Is Magnolia Point good for sunrise or sunset?
Sunset. It faces west over the hills. For sunrise, go to Koel View Point or the sunrise point at Prabhat Vihar.
What is the best month for sunset photos in Netarhat?
November to February, when the skies are clearest. Monsoon clouds often hide the sun from July to September.
Do I need a tripod in Netarhat?
It helps at dawn, when light is low and mist is in the valleys. Viewpoints get crowded at sunset, so a compact tripod is easier than a large one.
How long should I stay at Magnolia Point after sunset?
Not long. Watch the colours fade for 10–15 minutes, then head back while there is still some light on the forest road.
