Local tips

Wear walking shoes with good grip; the trail is steep with loose stones and roots.

Carry water, as there is nothing to buy on the trail or at the fall.

Visit between August and November for the strongest flow.

Ask your lodge about trail conditions before going in the monsoon.

Stay back from the pool, which is deep and fast after rain.

Combine with Upper Ghaghri Falls and the dam, which lie on the same route.

Go in the morning so you are back on the forest road well before dark.

The fall

Lower Ghaghri Falls is the bigger of Netarhat's two Ghaghri waterfalls, about 10 km from the plateau centre. Here the stream drops through a forested gorge in a long fall, often listed at about 98 metres in total, though the full drop is hard to see from one place. Dense trees surround it, and the gorge feels remote.

The walk

From the road, a trail leads down through the forest to the viewpoint. It is short, but it is steep in parts, with loose stones and roots, and it becomes slippery after rain. Allow 15–20 minutes down and more to climb back. Carry water, since there are no stalls on the trail.

When to go

From August to November the fall is at its most powerful. In winter it thins but remains attractive, and the walk is more comfortable. In the dry months before the monsoon, flow can drop sharply.

Safety

Stay back from the edge of the pool and the rocks at the base. The water is deep in places, and the current is strong after rain. Do not climb on the rocks beside the fall. In the monsoon, check with your driver or lodge before going, as the trail can be treacherous.

Getting there

Hire a car from Netarhat. The road passes through forest, so go in daylight. Upper Ghaghri Falls and Netarhat Dam are on the way and make easy extra stops.
