Local tips

Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to get a spot at the railings on weekends.

Bring a warm layer; the ridge is windy and cools fast once the sun drops.

Leave within 15 minutes of sunset so you drive back before full dark.

Hire a local driver who knows the unlit forest road back to town.

Carry water and a snack, as stalls are few and not always open.

Pick a clear winter evening; monsoon cloud often hides the sun.

Keep a torch handy for the walk from the viewpoint to the car park.

The viewpoint

Magnolia Sunset Point is Netarhat's best-known view. It sits on a ridge about 10 km from the centre of the plateau, facing west over layer after layer of forested hills. On a clear evening the sun drops into the ridges and the sky turns orange, then pink, then deep blue. Visitors line the railings, and a hush falls as the sun disappears.

The legend

The point is named after Magnolia, said to be the daughter of a British officer in the colonial period. The story goes that she fell in love with a local cowherd who played the flute, that her family opposed the match, and that he was killed. Heartbroken, she rode her horse off the cliff at this spot. A statue near the ridge shows the pair. It is a local legend rather than recorded history, but everyone here knows it.

When to go

November to February gives the clearest skies. In the monsoon, cloud often hides the sun. Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to find a space at the railings, especially on weekends and holidays.

Getting back

Leave soon after the sun sets. The road back runs through forest with no lighting, and heavy trucks use it. Locals advise being off the forest roads by dark. Drive slowly, or better, have a local driver who knows the road.

What to bring

Wind makes the ridge colder than you expect. Bring a warm layer, water and a torch. Stalls are few and seasonal.
