What to Wear in Netarhat

Netarhat is colder than anywhere else you will visit in Jharkhand. You spend your best hours standing still at a viewpoint at dawn or dusk, so pack warmer than you think.

Winter: take it seriously

From December to February, nights on the plateau can drop close to freezing, and dawn at the viewpoints is sharp and cold. Pack a proper jacket or fleece, a warm hat, and gloves if you feel the cold. Days warm up nicely, so layers you can peel off — a T-shirt, a sweater, a jacket — work best. Rooms in simple lodges may not be heated, so bring warm clothes for the evening too.

October, November and March

Days are pleasant, mornings and evenings cool. A sweater or light jacket is enough for most people.

Summer: April to June

Netarhat is noticeably cooler than Ranchi and the plains, which is why people come. Days are warm; evenings are pleasant. Light cottons for the day and a light layer for sunset are enough.

Monsoon: July to September

Rain is frequent, and mist can sit on the plateau for hours. A good rain jacket beats an umbrella on forest trails. Quick-dry trousers, a spare pair of socks and waterproof shoes help. Leeches can appear on forest paths after rain — long socks tucked over trousers help.

Shoes

The trails to Lower Ghaghri Falls and Upper Ghaghri Falls are rocky and can be wet. Wear trainers or walking shoes with grip. Flip-flops and fashion shoes are a bad idea.

At the viewpoints

Magnolia Point and the sunrise points are exposed ridges, and wind makes them feel colder. Earthy colours — rust, olive, cream, maroon — look good against the forest and the evening sky in photos.

What to buy

Jharkhand weaves tussar silk from wild cocoons, and handloom emporiums in Ranchi stock Kuchai and other regional tussar. Around the plateau you may see the handwoven cotton textiles of Oraon and Munda communities, worn at Sarhul and Karma. Buy them to wear with respect, not as fancy dress. Netarhat itself has few shops, so buy essentials and warm clothes in Ranchi before you drive up.
