Summer days, winter nights

In July and August, afternoons by the lake can be pleasant in the sun, but average night temperatures are only a few degrees above freezing. In June and September they drop below zero. The wind off the water makes it feel colder still. Wear a thermal base layer, a fleece and a warm jacket, and keep a down jacket in the car for the evening and for sunrise.

Chang La

Chang La is above 5,300 m and colder than the lake. There can be snow at the top even in summer. Put on your jacket, hat and gloves before you get out of the car.

Sun and glare

The sun is fierce at this altitude and the lake reflects it. Wear good sunglasses with UV protection, a hat or cap, and sunscreen on your face and the backs of your hands. Lip balm helps in the dry air. A buff or scarf keeps both sun and dust off.

Shoes

Trainers with grip are fine for the shore in summer. Closed, warm shoes are better for early mornings. You will not need rain gear most of the time: rainfall at Pangong is very low, even in July and August.

Sleeping in a camp

Camps provide heavy blankets, but tents cool quickly after the power goes off. Sleep in thermals, socks and a warm hat. Keep your phone and camera batteries inside your sleeping layers.

Winter

The lake freezes in winter, and temperatures fall well below minus 15°C. If you come for the frozen lake in February, you need proper winter gear: insulated boots, a heavy down jacket, thermal layers, insulated gloves and a balaclava.

Local dress

Ladakhis traditionally wear the goncha, a thick woollen robe tied with a sash, and it is sold in Leh. The perak, a headdress set with turquoise, is a family heirloom worn at weddings and festivals rather than something visitors buy. When you stop at monasteries on the way, cover your shoulders and knees.

Gear such as down jackets can be bought, and often rented, in Leh before you leave.

Questions

Pangong Tso — FAQ

Do I need a down jacket at Pangong in July?

Yes. Days can be mild, but nights and sunrise are close to freezing, and Chang La on the way is colder still.

What should I wear to sleep in a Pangong camp?

Thermals, warm socks and a woollen hat under the camp's blankets. Tents lose heat fast once the evening power supply stops.

Is it fine to wear shorts at Pangong?

Only for a short time in the midday sun, and it is not wise. The sun burns quickly at this altitude and the temperature falls fast once the sun goes behind a cloud.

Where can I buy or rent warm clothes for Pangong?

In Leh, before you set out. There are no proper shops at the lake, only small stalls.
