Start early in the morning when birds are most active.

Islands in the Siang

Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary protects a cluster of islands and sandbanks in the Siang, south of Pasighat. It is a landscape of tall grass, shallow channels and sandy shores, shaped every year by the river's floods. The sanctuary is named after Daying Ering, a leader from the region.

Wildlife

Winter is the season for birds. Migratory ducks, geese and waders arrive on the channels and islands, joining resident storks, herons and kingfishers. Hog deer and wild buffalo live in the grasslands, along with smaller animals. The birds are the main draw for most visitors.

Getting there

The sanctuary is reached by boat, usually from the forest range office at Borguli, a drive from Pasighat. Boat trips need to be arranged with the forest department, which also issues entry permits, on top of your Inner Line Permit or PAP. Your hotel or a local guide can help with the arrangements. There is basic forest accommodation at Borguli if booked ahead.

When to go

Roughly November to March, when the river is low and migratory birds are present. In the monsoon, floods cover much of the sanctuary and boats may not run.

Getting the photograph

From the boat, look for birds on sandbanks against the grass and water. Long lenses help, as birds keep their distance. Morning light is softest and wildlife most active.

Visiting well

Keep noise down, follow your boatman's instructions and wear your life jacket. Carry water, sun protection and binoculars. Pair with the Siang riverbanks at sunset.
