The five spots
- Siang River — the broad channels and sandbanks just outside town, best at sunset.
- Pasighat Riverfront — the easiest place to watch the river, with evening walkers and families.
- Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary — grassland islands in the river, reached by boat, with birds in winter.
- Kekar Monying — a dark cliff above the Siang, north of town, with history as well as views.
- Pangin Confluence — where the Siyom meets the Siang among forested hills.
Light and weather
From October to March, skies are usually clear and the light is soft and golden in the late afternoon. Sunsets over the river are the best reason to be out. From May to September, heavy cloud and rain are common, and river levels rise dramatically.
On the water
Boat trips at Daying Ering and rafting on the Siang give angles you cannot get from the bank. Keep your camera in a dry bag and only take it out in calm stretches. Wear a life jacket at all times.
People
Ask before photographing people in villages and markets. At festivals, performers usually welcome photos, but ask before shooting priests, rituals or elders up close.
Getting around
The river spots near town are easy by taxi or auto-rickshaw. Kekar Monying and Pangin are longer drives north, so hire a car and driver for the day and leave early. Daying Ering needs a boat arranged in advance.
Heat and haze
In the warm months, haze can soften distant views. Early morning and the last hour before sunset give the clearest light. Carry water; it gets hot on the sandbanks.
